The Journey to Sringeri
Our drive to Sringeri was nothing short of scenic, with winding roads cutting through Malenadu regions verdant landscapes.
Located about 2 hours from Chikkamagaluru and 2.4 hours from Mangalore, Sringeri is easily accessible for a day trip. For those traveling from Bangalore, it’s roughly 318 km away, making it a perfect 7-hour drive for a weekend getaway.
First Impressions of Sringeri Temple
As we arrived at the Sringeri Temple, we noticed the parking lot was bustling with countless vehicles. This hinted at a crowded scene inside.
To our surprise, the temple was well-organized, and the crowd was manageable. We joined the queue and were blessed with a quick darshan of Goddess Sharadamba, the deity of learning and wisdom, whose divine presence left us in awe.
The Sringeri Temple complex is a treasure trove of spirituality and architectural grandeur. The two main temples here. 1) Sharadamba Temple (goddess of knowledge) and the 2) Sri Vidyashankara Temple, a 14th-century architectural marvel built entirely of stone in the Hoysala-Dravidian style.
Sri Vidyashankara Temple (Sringeri)
The Vidyashankara Temple is particularly striking, with its 12 sculpted pillars, each representing a zodiac sign. The design of these pillars is ingenious. The sun’s rays illuminate them in the order of the solar months. This arrangement is a testament to ancient engineering brilliance. The inner sanctum (Garbha Griha) houses deities like Vidya Ganapathi and Goddess Durga. It also includes Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwara. This makes it a spiritual powerhouse.
A Hub of Tradition and Rituals
The Sringeri Temple is not just a place of worship but a center of profound cultural practices.
One of the most heartwarming rituals we witnessed was Aksharabhyasa or Vidyarambha, where parents bring their young children (aged 2.5 to 5 years) to write their first letters under the blessings of Goddess Sharadamba.
The faith in the goddess is palpable. Children and even adults were seen writing the names of gods on paper. They prayed for success in their exams. This deep-rooted belief in the goddess’s power to bestow wisdom is truly inspiring.
The temple is open from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
Like most Hindu temples, there are strict guidelines. Men must remove shirts before entering the Gurunivas. Footwear is prohibited inside. Photography is restricted within the temple, though it is permitted outside and in the complex.

- Crowds: Weekdays are less crowded than weekends, so plan your visit accordingly for a more peaceful experience.
- Parking and Facilities: There is ample parking space available. I’m unsure about cloakroom facilities because we traveled by car and didn’t need one. Restrooms are available within the temple premises.
- Prasadam: Food counters offer temple prasadams, which are a must-try for their divine taste and spiritual significance.
- Nearby Attractions: While in Sringeri, don’t miss the picturesque Sirimane Falls, a short drive away. If time permits, explore Kuppalli, home to Kavimane and Kavishaila, for a dose of literary and cultural heritage.
