Looking for a serene getaway in the heart of Karnataka? Let me take you through my unforgettable experience at Bananki Homestay. It is nestled in the charming town of Thirthahalli, Shimoga District, India. If you’re planning a trip to this part of the world, this blog post will help you decide why Bananki should be on your list.

Bananki Homestay First Impressions: A Resort-Like Retreat

As I arrived at Bananki Homestay, I was instantly struck by its grandeur. It looked more like a resort than a typical homestay! I had to confirm with the owner, who assured me it was indeed a homestay.

The property is set midst sprawling coffee plantations. It is a green oasis with meticulously maintained trees and plants. The property resembles a botanical garden. I was so enchanted that I recommended it to a couple of friends right after my trip. I am sure you will feel the same urge to return again and again.

Exploring the Bananki Homestay

Bananki Homestay spans roughly 2 acres within a larger 10-acre coffee plantation. As you enter the gates, you will see a beautiful bungalow. I assume the owners stay here and all the cooking takes place in this bungalow.

The guest dining hall is separate, and you will be called for meals promptly. From the parking area, you can see the beautifully designed cottages, which come in various sizes.

Ours accommodated five people, perfect for our group of four, though smaller cottages are available for couples or small families.

The property is a paradise for kids, with skateboards, cycles, a Foosball table, and a trampoline. Indoor games like carom board and chess are set up near the well-maintained swimming pool.

Elders can relax in the sit-out area while watching the kids enjoy the pool. At night, a campfire is set up by the poolside, complete with outdoor dining.

We sipped drinks while others sang and danced to classics by Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar. We were surrounded by the mesmerizing sounds of crickets and wild insects. It was a natural symphony that’s music to your ears.

Our Rooms at Bananki Homestay

Our group of four was assigned a room for five, ensuring we could all stay together. It had two double cots and one single cot, with the only minor drawback being a single washroom.

The room was spacious and air-conditioned. It was furnished with intricately carved wooden furniture. This included a wardrobe, coat stand, table, and a stand for our water bottle.

The beds were clean, and the towels were freshly ironed. The large old-school washroom was interesting. Basic toiletries like soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, body wash, and shampoo were provided.

I would recommend this room for families with small children or seniors—it is ideal for keeping everyone together comfortably.

Bananki is a Foodie’s Delight

The food at Bananki Homestay is a major highlight and one of the reasons I keep raving about this place. The Mangalorean-style cuisine, offering both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, was unlimited and bursting with flavour.

Dishes ranged from Akki Roti and various curries to unique accompaniments made from mango and eggplant. Every dish was freshly prepared. Each was served with love.

The chicken biryani and fish fry, cooked in a native style, were exceptional. For dinner, we enjoyed neer dosa, idly, chicken gravy, egg fry, and a local coconut sweet.

It’s not the expansive spread of a resort. However, the variety and quality were impressive. The staff took special care of us during meals, including the owner. You will leave the table satisfied and happy!

This homestay is perfect for anyone planning a weekend escape from Bengaluru or Mysuru. It offers a peaceful retreat with family or friends.

If you are exploring Shimoga or Thirthahalli, Bananki homestay is a great base. These areas are known for their natural beauty and cultural heritage. They hold historical significance as the birthplace of Kannada literary giant Kuvempu.

While here, you can visit Kuppalli, a nearby village with attractions like Kavimane and Kavishaila.

The drive through hill stations, coffee plantations, and lush forests is a treat. It is especially enjoyable if you are coming from an urban jungle.

I visited Bananki Homestay in May 2025 with three other friends, travelling from Bengaluru in a Kia Seltos. We booked our stay directly by calling the owner (contact numbers are available online) and paid Rs. 2000 in advance. The total cost for the four of us, including stay and food, was Rs. 11,000.

Bananki Homestay Booking Tips

I recommend booking directly with the owner rather than using booking apps for a hassle-free experience. The Bananki Homestay is listed on TripAdvisor but for some reason, it was not available for booking.

So plan ahead, especially if you are travelling during peak months, to secure your preferred cottage. If you are a group or family, consider the larger room to stay together. Remember to pack swimsuits for the pool!
